As you must all be knowing by now, I was approached to be one of the 13 lucky bloggers for the Malaysia Kitchen Summit in Australia. As part of the summit, I will be reviewing four local Malaysian restaurants and you can help me win a dream foodie trip to Malaysia by "Liking" my review. This is the second of my four reviews.
For people like me living in the beautiful bushland shire of Sydney’s upper north shore, Mamak Chatswood is a quick sinful Malaysian hawker food tryst. A tangible and naughty love affair with our tastebuds that is only a mere 20-30 minutes from most north shore suburban spots. Located conveniently on Eat Street at Chatswood Central, it is fast, tasty, cheap and constant with its friendly waiters all dressed casually in black and the roti flipping ninjas encased in a glass covered open kitchen that mesmerise and wow you as you watch. I love it!
Earlier this week, Nick and I meet at Mamak Chatswood for an early lunch. 12:00 noon seems to be the magical hour. Come 5 minutes early and you can take a pick of the wonderfully street side rustic stools and brown tables. Come 5 minutes later and the place is crowded and buzzing with activity. There is almost never a long wait. The longest we have queued to be seated was 10 minutes and that was during peak lunch hour.
As usual we are greeted with friendly smiles and prompt service, something I really love about this place. And the menu. Although not very extensive, Mamak does a fantastic array of rotis from savoury to sweet. No matter how many times you turn up to tantalise your senses, there is always plenty to choose.
We order our dishes and are informed that the Lamb Murtabak will take about 20 minutes. We are happy with that because the rest of our order starts trickling in a few minutes after we have placed it.
The Kopi Tarik ($3.50) is sweet, strong, hot and laced with that delicious froth I have come to love. It reminds me of the sweet coffee sold at railway stations in India’s south.
The Ayam Goreng ($8.00) arrives next. 2 pieces of juicy, succulent chicken cooked on bone and fried to perfection with the most delicious, crunchy, golden coating. Oh My God! I think I am ordering this dish every single time I come to Mamak. It is brilliant.
The Roti Canai ($5.50) is one of my favourite things to eat at Mamak. It is a scrunched up ball of flaky goodness again served with their 3 dipping sauces. The Roti Planta ($6.50) is rich and buttery, served in Mamak’s trademark compartmentalised steel plates. It has 2 dipping sauces with the sambal and is good.
The Lamb Murtabak ($11.50) finally arrives. It is like a stuffed pancake. Roti on the outside cooked to a golden crisp hue and stuffed with delicious cooked minced lamb. It is very different from the Murtabak that we are used to having in Singapore. Although the filling is delicious and meaty, the roti covering it is paper thin. I would’ve loved more roti covering the meat.
The 1/2 Dozen Chicken Satay ($9.00) are succulent, charred in all the right places and accompanied by a delicious, chunky peanut sauce that is sweet and flavourful.
The Ais Kacang ($6.00) is a colourful and delightful concoction of rose syrup, corn, jelly, red beans and sweetened milk on a mountain of shaved ice. Nick instantly grabs the bowl as if to say "I’ll never let go!". Well I did mention, he is the Ais Kacang ambassador, didn’t I?
The Roti Tisu ($9.50) is a work of art. It is a hollow mountain of paper thin roti with flecks of sticky sugar bits covering it like a dusting of snow. I order it with the condensed milk and as the sticky cream liquid drizzles down the mountain, I think I die of sheer happiness. Next time I will order it with ice cream. I felt the sugar crust and the condensed milk became a bit too sweet for me.
Save the best for last. Always! The
Cendol ($6.00) is the highlight of my meal. Cendol is a dessert of pandan flavoured noodles topped with crushed ice and a generous serving of gula melaka and coconut milk. It is my absolute most favourite dessert to eat and Mamak does it very well indeed. Of course I have to
Instagram it and
Tweet it and post it a thousand other places so everyone can look, salivate and be envious!
And just like that, another fabulous meal at Mamak is done in a jiffy amidst the crescendo of noisy lunch goers and the thump thump of the barely audible music playing somewhere in the background. Nick and I leave as quickly as we arrived, sated, happy and already planning our next lunch at Mamak Chatswood.

i’ve lost count how many times Mamak has been reviewed but your photos are some of the best I’ve seen I think. I haven’t tried the Chatswood store but it looks pretty nice inside.
Thnx Simon! I appreciate that
Stunning photos which are making me crave Mamak right now. I love cendol too…and the ayam chook is to die for. In fact everything at Mamak is splendid!
Wow, the roti tisu is definitely a work of art!!! It looks amazing.

My fave at this place is the mee goreng (using Maggi mee) as opposed to the regular egg noodles. The chicken satays and roti are pretty good although I found the fried chicken a little oily and could have done with a little more seasoning. Great photos!
