I call this a Happy Smoothie because that is exactly what it does! A mood-enhancing smoothie with the goodness of bananas, cacao, almond and cinnamon, this smoothie not only provides beneficial potassium and antioxidants but improves the mood and makes you feel energized and positively happy. Banana and almond increase the production of serotonin while cacao triggers the release of endorphins. A glass of this keeps the grumpies away and my boys absolutely love the chocolate-caramel flavour!
The Fate Of Sad Bananas In The Lunchbox
My boys are good at eating most things, but they have this thing with bananas with bruised coloured peels even if they are perfect on the inside. What is even worse is that they create this problem. Every morning, I pack a perfect banana in their lunchboxes and four out of five times during the week, I find that banana the following morning, stuffed under some oranges in the fruit basket. But now the banana is bruised and looking really forlorn and sad after having traveled to school and gotten bashed and bruised in the lunchbox at lunchtime.
So now, instead of sitting them down for a lecture on the benefits of eating bananas, I just make these Happy Smoothies. They are highly nutritious and perfect for after-school snacks and for recharging after-sport sessions. In fact, I never have to ask the boys twice to drink these smoothies. They are also incredibly easy to make and kids can make them or help you make them. Yes! These Happy Smoothies are the perfect solution to sad bananas!
- 4 overripe medium bananas, peeled
- 2 cups almond or soy milk
- 2 tablespoons cacao powder
- 2 teaspoons maca powder
- 1 tablespoon peanut or almond butter
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Place all ingredients for the smoothie in the jug of a blender and process until smooth.
- Pour in 2 X 325 ml lidded glass jars. Store in the fridge for up to three days.
